Hello, my name is Lisa. I began dancing at just 2 years old, taught by my mum, Miss Bettie Vowles, who ran the Westbury School of Dance in Bristol.
As the youngest of five, we all learned to dance, but only my sister and I continued beyond childhood. I loved performing in shows and festivals, collecting medals, trophies and wonderful memories.
By 14, I was helping my mum teach younger pupils and later choreographing for shows and festivals. I also started a fun adult tap class called Lisa’s Tappers, which became a much‑loved part of her school.
When my mum sadly passed away in 1999, her successful school closed. I continued running the adult tap classes, and after having my own children, I realised how much I missed teaching little ones. With encouragement from my family, I decided to open my own school, using everything my mum taught me.
I wanted Stepping Out to be welcoming, fun and pressure‑free — no exams, no strict uniforms, just a place where children and adults can dance, perform and enjoy themselves.
